The image of the Crimea in the memoir by French emigrant Paul Guibal

The author of this essay analyses current publication of a source supplying important account of the Black Sea area in the final years of Alexander I. T.P. Peters has discovered, prepared for publication, translated from French into Russian, and commented the travelogue by French emigrant Paul Guibal, who in 1818–1819 made a journey from Odessa through the Crimea and Caucasus, possibly with a mission inspired by the government of the New Russia. The place occupied by this source in the line of other French memoirs describing the region in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century and its role for the studies of the image of the Crimea in the public mind have been uncovered.
