On the New Edition of «Memoirs» by Margaret of Navarre

   The literary image of Margaret, Queen of Navarre, «Queen Margot» is familiar to everybody from childhood, thanks to the efforts of novelists, essayists, filmmakers. It exits for a long time a necessity to separate facts from legends and to restore historical justice for one of the main actors of political life in France at the second half of the 16th century. The recent Russian edition of the memoirs of Marguerite de Valois, prepared by V. Shishkin, Petersburg historian, lets readers hear the own voice of this daughter of France, and shows the true face of the woman who lived in the controversial epoch of Religious wars.
