The SS Charlemagne Division. History, membership, posterity

French participation in the Second World War still has little-known aspects, the discovery of which can enrich our knowledge of the political and, above all, military history of France during these dark years. Among these, military collaboration has a privileged place, because it is interesting from several points of view, but very little known. Interestingly, it is not directly linked to the behaviour of the French government. It was mainly the collaborationist parties in Paris that tried to monopolise this special relationship with the German occupier. The result of this cooperation was the creation of several military formations composed of Frenchmen serving under the German flag. By far the best-known unit was the Charlemagne Division, which fought as part of the Waffen-SS on the Eastern Front. In 1943, the defeats suffered on all fronts forced Germany to resort to French military potential. The German high command therefore decided to extend recruitment for the Waffen-SS to France. The relatively high number of volunteers allowed the establishment of a French unit within the Waffen-SS which took part in the fighting in Galicia and Pomerania in 1944-1945. Some volunteers even fought in Berlin in the spring of 1945. Beyond its military activity, the fate of its members is also particularly interesting. Therefore, an attempt has been made to present the general characteristics of this little-known group in order to better understand this more or less forgotten part of French history.
