The French and Russians in the years of the July Monarchy: contacts and mutual perception (on the book by Natalia Tanshina)

Gladyshev Andrey

The author of the essay offers the readers a critical analysis of the new work of Natalia Tanshina « Autocracy and Liberalism: the era of Nicholas I and Louis-Philippe of Orleans ». He underlined that relations between France ruled by Louis-Philippe of Orleans and Russia of Emperor Nicholas I were very difficult for various reasons. The Russian Empire was utterly disliked by the French «liberal public». On the contrary, the official position of Russia towards France was largely determined by personal attitude of the Russian Emperor who treated the «King of barricades» with suspicion. The «autocracy» of French public opinion which was imbued with stereotype negative images of Russia deteriorated these relations no less than the autocracy of the Russian government and all the tricks of Russian police.
