The study focuses on the sphere of numerous and diverse contacts of Napoleon’s army with the representatives of the local nobility (gentry – shlakhta) in the provinces created by the Russian Empire out from the possessions and dependent territories of the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The author explores in detail, using quantitative analysis, the presence of social labeling concepts as well as the names and positions of contactees mentioned in the military correspondence. Other issues include the modalities of communication, attitudes towards landlords' property, seeking support from a key social group (the nobility), as well as the reasons for avoiding cooperation.
