The paper reveals the interrelation between the Moroccan monarchy and the French colonialists in the early years of occupation of Moroccan territory by France. Exploring the variety of distinctive features of French conquest, the author tries to outline the fundamental causes, which contributed to depressing perception of “infidels’ success” in the ruling circles of Morocco. Based on range of various sources, the paper reflects key trends of socio-psychological atmosphere in the Far Maghrib in the epoch, anterior to the French Protectorate. Some specific features of particulartheoretical settings and differences in approaches to assessment of contacts between conquerors and Moroccans, which were developed in Russian, Western and Arab historiography, are also covered in the article.
