Vendée: from genocide to memoricide

Secher Reynald

The essay put up the Russian-speaking reader to the basic ideas of the book Vendée: du génocide au mémoricide by the same author, published in France. Analyzing the policy of the Convention and of the Committee of Public Safety, designed to suppress the Vendée uprising, R. Secher comes to the conclusion that its main parameters are corresponded with the characters of genocide that have been defined by the Nuremberg Tribunal. The author considers the activities of public authorities and of private persons, aiming to erase from the collective memories the acts of genocide or justify them presenting as a result of necessity or even a manifestation of valor, as a natural extension of the policy of genocide. R. Secher offers to denote such activity by the term of "memoricide" and to consider it as a crime against humanity.
