От Пиренейского полуострова до России, в колониях и на море, тысячи французских солдат попадали в плен во время Наполеоновских войн. Какая участь ожидала их в плену? Тогда еще не существовало юридически обязательных для всех международных конвенций, подобных тем, которые начнут появляться в конце XIX в. Условия любой капитуляции часто оставлялись на усмотрение действующих генералов, хотя те знали, что в их же интересах проявить некоторое милосердие к пленным, поскольку от принятых ими решений может зависеть судьба их собственных людей. Тем не менее, условия сдачи в плен сильно разнились. Лишь немногие счастливчики могли надеяться стать предметом обмена военнопленными. Офицеры могли рассчитывать на условно-досрочное освобождение для пребывания в определенных для них городах, откуда обещали не сбегать. Нижним чинам везло гораздо меньше: они обычно содержались в тюрьмах, в специальных лагерях или на старых кораблях. Особое внимание в статье уделено тем условиям, в которых пребывали в Великобритании французские военнопленные во время войны.
